Description
The SNAP-Ed program supports healthy food education among SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) recipients. The Food, Fitness and Opportunity Research Collaborative (FFORC) currently implements SNAP-Ed programming in fourteen counties across North Carolina, including Alamance, Beaufort, Duplin, Halifax, Lenoir, Martin, Mecklenburg, Moore, Orange, Randolph, Rockingham, Sampson, Warren, and Wilkes counties. Currently, the SNAP-Ed programs include: supporting the development and sustainability of community gardens; providing nutrition education to children; increasing access to healthy foods through the federal child nutrition programs; improving opportunities for physical activity in communities; facilitating community conversations on ways to increase access to healthy food; supporting two local food policy councils; conducting healthy retail interventions to make it easier to select healthy foods; and leading social marketing sessions to help young mothers budget for healthy foods.
